ARTIST STATEMENT

Since the end of the 70’s I have had a special concern with the themes of violence, social injustice, political oppression, environmental problems, and the role of women, their functions,
and the symbolic meaning of the female body. As a woman artist I have been able to interact andengage in a dialogue between my female body and sociopolitical, environmental, and psychological issues.

In both performance and installation, my body has been the tool for communicating and reflecting, it has been a vehicle for rebellion and liberation. The body as representation calls on
the audience to shake off imposed standards that prompt them to meekly and inertly obey the
behavioral models set by the centers of power.

My work is loaded with organic elements, coming from nature and from the actions inflicted
upon my own body.

I grew up amidst the turmoil in Colombia and the oppression that prevailed all over Latin America. My body has been the vehicle for projecting my emotions and concerns. One constant in my conception of art has been to make the invisible visible, highlighting significant moments for feminism, social politics, or environmentalism, that at the time had not seen the light or that had been minimized.
